This week we are covering the reproductive systems, pregnancy, & touch, consent, & abstinence. Students will have their final, open-note test on either Friday of this week or Monday of next week (depending on how long it takes us to get through the material).

Science:
-To coincide with our study of space, we are continuing to watch the PG rated film "Apollo 13" which is based on a true story. Students are expected to complete a movie study guide and participate in class discussion related to the movie.
If your student did not have permission, or did not bring back the permission slip, they are working on a research paper about the Apollo 13 Mission.

We will continue our study of space for the remainder of the school year.

Math Perham Periods 1-3

   Students have an assignment each day in class.  If it isn't finished in class students need to finish it for homework.

Math Perham Period 4
   Students will be completing the mini human project this week.  This project will only be done in class.  Homework would be revising or completing any missing work or low score assignments.

Geography
Tomorrow students are showing their country expert project to the class. Thursday we will begin our last unit of the year, learning about the continent of Africa and its 54 countries. Please check in with your student about their classwork, as a number of students in each of the four geography classes currently have missing assignments. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.


Science:
-This week Tuesday and Wednesday we are working on our Solar System Celestial Body poster projects (they are due this Friday, May 31).  
-To coincide with our study of space, starting this Thursday we will be watching the PG rated film "Apollo 13" which is based on a true story.  This is a synopsis of the movie from Commonsensemedia.org:  "Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks plays real-life astronaut-hero Jim Lovell in this true story of the APOLLO 13 mission to the moon that almost left three astronauts stranded in space when an oxygen tank exploded. Mission Control, thousands of miles away from the stranded astronauts, must figure out a way to get the men home in one piece."
In order for your student to watch this film, we MUST have a signed permission slip (handed out today and also attached to this message) no later than this Thursday morning.  If you do not want your student to watch, please check the appropriate box on the slip.  An alternative assignment will be provided for students who do not watch the film.  Thank you.

Math Periods 1-3 Perham

Students are completing review assignments on Tuesday and Wednesday.  There is a test on exponents on Thursday.

Math Period 4 Perham
Students are completing review lessons on Tuesday and Wednesday.  There is a test on geometry on Thursday.
The test is on vocabulary and using formulas.
   
Algebra 1 Mr. Thornton
This week we begin reviewing for the end of the year final exam. Homework will be limited but practice problems will be provided so students can practice skills they will see on the final. The exam is worth 200 points and covers material that we leaned throughout the entire year.

Band and Vocal
Middle school band and choir concert is this Thursday! Band students are to arrive no later than 6:30 to the band room. Concert begins promptly at 7pm. Please join us in celebrating our young musician's accomplishments this year!

This week, we are covering pregnancy, healthy touch & consent.  Final test for FLASH unit will be either Thursday or Friday.  Student will rotate to final class of the year on Tuesday, May 28th.
Geography

Students are working on their country expert projects. They are researching their chosen country in order to create a presentation to share with the class that will teach them about key aspects of that country.

Science:
-This week we are studying the "Space Race" and exploration of our solar system.  Students will also be starting a Solar System Celestial Body Poster Project.  Wise use of class time should enable all students to complete most or all of this project during provided class time.  The poster will be due early to middle of next week. 
-8th graders will be doing the state science test tomorrow Tuesday, May 21.

 This week we are discussing the reproductive unit for males and females.

Geography
We are finishing the historical novel that we have been reading in class, "Refugee", and will be wrapping it up by connecting the story to some of the geographic topics that we have been studying. Students are also working on a map of the region that we are currently studying, East and Southeast Asia. Lastly, we will be working on a project where each kid researches a chosen country to become a class expert on it, and then creates a presentation about their country for the class.

Science:
-This week we are studying Unit 5 Solar and Lunar Eclipses.  There will be a Unit 4 and 5 quiz this Friday.
-8th graders will be doing the state science test next Tuesday, May 21.

This week in FLASH, we will be learning about Puberty and Hygiene.  Please talk to your students about what we learn in class! :) 

Geography
We have finished studying South Asia and will be moving on this week to learn about East Asia. The students will get the chance in the coming weeks to pick a country in this region and become the "class expert" on their chosen country. Next, they will create a presentation highlighting important and interesting aspects of that country and its people.
Finally, we are rapidly approaching the end of our historical novel "Refugee". Students have been writing journal entries from the perspective of one of the characters, and should check to make sure that they are caught up on their entries (1 per chapter of their character's story). Students who need to catch up on the reading have the option of signing out one of the books from class.

This week we are continuing our study of the Moon in Unit 4.  Students are learning the phases of the moon and will also study the Moon's influence on tides.  If we have time, we will move on to Unit 5 Solar and Lunar Eclipses.  There will be a test on Unit 4 and 5 near the end of next week.

Math Periods 1-3 Perham
Students will continue to make trades in the stock market game and monitor their portfolio.  There will be a test on volume and scientific notation on Friday. This week we will take a practice state assessment, cover some review material, and become proficient with the online calculator. The state math test will begin on Wednesday the 15th.

Math Period 4 Perham
Students are studying circles and area of composite figures. We will have an assignment each day in class.  If students do not finish in class they need to complete it for homework.  There is plenty of assignment work time given each day. The math state assessment will begin on May 22nd for this class.

We start state testing this week in Language Arts! We will begin with the CAT test on Thursday and Friday.  Please make sure your students gets a good night's rest and eats breakfast before they come to school! Also, if your student has a pair of headphone, they might prefer to use them over one from the school. 

ACADEMY - Ms. Billings Class Rotation
In our final week of Flash, we are covering Pregnancy, Healthy Touch, & Consent.  Students will have an open note test on Friday covering these topics + Reproductive vocabulary. 

Geography
This week we will be finishing our look at South Asia and beginning our study of East Asia. We are continuing to read the historical novel "Refugee", and making connections between the story and geographic topics in class.

  Students made their first trade in the stock market game.  Students are competing to see who can make their $100,000 of play money grow the most by June 6th.  There is a Prodigy assignment loaded to help students review for the state math assessment.  Students have two weeks to complete 40 questions.

   The angles test will be on Wednesday this week.  There is a review assignment on Monday for this unit. There is also a Prodigy assignment loaded to help students review for the state math assessment.  Students have two weeks to complete 40 questions.

-We are starting a new textbook this week ""Space Systems Exploration".  We will be using this book for the remainder of the school year.  Students have online access to this textbook through Google Classroom.  This week we will be exploring "The Sun-Earth-Moon System"

   This is the last week of quarter 3.  Students need to turn in missing and revised assignment by Friday to improve their quarter 3 grade.  The unit tests will be next week. If a student wants to retake a test they need to turn in test corrections and review work.

This week we begin unit 9. This unit focuses on the study of quadratics. Typically this is the hardest chapter for students to grasp, so the pace of the class is going to slow down. I anticipate that we will end unit 9 towards the end of April.

Science:
This week students are finishing up our "Energy, Forces, and Motion" textbook with a final design challenge "The Amazing Egg Drop Challenge".  Students will be designing, building and testing a container to protect a raw egg when it is dropped from the Billie Stadium Skybox.  Students received an information sheet/scoring guide today in class.  Students will design and construct their container Monday-Wednesday.  We will test on Thursday.  A formal lab report will be due Tuesday, April 9.

   Students are in the middle of a unit of study.  Their last test was returned before the snow days.  If students are wanting to retake the unit test they need to make test corrections and complete at least 10 review questions.  There will be an assignment each day in class this week.  Please know that students may revise any assignment to earn a higher score.

Geography
We are continuing our unit on North Africa, Southwest & Central Asia. The students are currently working on completing a political & physical map of these regions. They have been strongly encouraged to work on it at home, and it is due this Friday (Feb. 22nd). We will also be starting to read the historical fiction book "Refugee" this week. This story follows three characters, who are modeled after real historical people, as they are forced to flee their homelands due to war & oppression (Nazi Germany, Cuba, & Syria).
Finally, students should be working on their "Current Event" quarterly assignment. This is a paper handout that they should bring home and work on. It is due at the end of the quarter, but they are strongly encouraged to complete and turn it in sooner rather than later.

Science:
-This week in science we are working through Unit 7 Collisions (Investigations 7.1 and 7.2).

Over the past two weeks we have been working on exponent properties. This week we will focus our attention on rational exponents and how they relate to radical expression.

Band
The Pep Band will be playing at the boys and girls varsity basketball games this evening (Monday). Rehearsal will begin promptly at 5:00 pm in the high school band room.

Middle School jazz band will meet after school on Thursday from 3:15-4:00.

We are finishing our Holocaust unit with a Remembrance Wall project. Each student has read the stories of several people who experienced the Holocaust, and they then selected one of those people to create a small poster about. The posters will both tell about who the person was and what they went through, and contain a personal tribute written or created by the student to honor that person. We should be finished with this before the end of the week, and will then spend a day or two learning about European micro countries.               -Mr. Jury

Today and tomorrow we are taking the  semester 1 final exam. This exam gives me a good idea where students stand in regards to all the material we learned during the 1st semester. On Wednesday we will be starting unit 7.

 This week we will finish the last of the eras in European history presentations. After that, we will begin our unit on the Holocaust.

This week the students are giving presentations on different eras in European history. They have spent a lot of time researching their assigned era and making a poster of it, and each group or individual student will teach their classmates about their era on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Following the completion of that project, we will be starting a mini-unit on the Holocaust. This is a difficult topic to discuss, teach, and learn about, but it is also a vitally important event to learn about and understand. I will be sending out an email with more details about this to the parents of all of my 7th grade students later today.

Science:
-This week we are finishing our unit on Magnets.  We will be completing Investigation 3.3 "Magnets at a Distance".  We will then begin Unit 4 Newton's First and Second Laws.

-This week we are completing Investigations 2.3 "Mass and Speed",  2.4 "Listening for Speed, and 2.5 "Measuring Gravitational Force". When students are absent, they need to come in to make up the lab.

   We have a smaller class now with a new combination of students.  We will use this week to practice the introduction to algebra concepts.  We will be learning distributive property and solving two step equations.

PE Period 6- 8th grade
   We will now have three teachers for the 8th grade PE sections.  Mr. Joel, Mr. Kent and Mrs. Perham will each have a class.  Students will rotate from a game unit to fitness unit to a recreation unit.  We will continue to have choices for students on Fridays that combine all three classes. The grading practices and syllabus have not changed.

Algebra 1 Thornton
We are starting unit 4 this week (linear functions). I currently have a student teacher who is going to be teaching a few lessons beginning Monday. I am excited to see him teach and I think he is well prepared.

Also, please check the grading program to view unit 3 exam scores. If the score is below 80%, the exam can be made up.


Geography 

We have started our mini-unit on the Main World Religions. This unit helps us all understand what the core/basic tenants,beliefs, and practices are of the 6 most common religions of our global community: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism. This unit is used as a basis of understanding cultures and practices around the world and our own country, especially when we begin doing regional studies next quarter.    Students are solving multi-step equations this week and then completing a review of all block 1 material.  There will be a test on all block 1 algebra concepts next week. Math prodigy is extra credit this week.

   Students are learning how to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers.  They have an assignment each day to practice these skills without a calculator. Math prodigy is extra credit this week.

Language Arts

-Continue reading Lyddie in class and answer RJ questions.

-CELL MODEL project due at the beginning of class on TUESDAY, Oct. 9 (periods 1,3,5) and WEDNESDAY, Oct. 10 (periods 2,4,6)  Students received a handout last week with all of the details of this assignment. (Please note, you do not need to buy anything for this project.  Students should be creative with what they already have at home.) Edible models MUST be covered when brought to school.

-Photosynthesis Quiz this Thursday!  Students should study all of section 4 in their lab notebooks.

Math with Mrs. Perham
   Students received their block 1 test back on Monday.  If students want to complete a retake test to improve their grade they must complete test corrections.  Help is available for students to complete their test corrections before school, during lunch and during period 7. Students can also watch videos for the math concepts they struggled to understand using the corefocusonmath.com website.  Students will receive assignment credit for video notes they complete independently.

Algebra 1 Thornton

This week is a weird week with many high school student taking state wide assessments. Class time will be utilized to build math vocabulary and help students identify common assessment words. With no school on Friday, we will start unit 3 next Monday.



Geography 

  • Finish up the 30 Human Rights Reflection Journal using the link from the United Nations Human Rights Council. The link and instructions can be found on google classroom. - Due Monday
  • Create a Human Rights poster - high quality individual poster that will promote one Human Right (HR # , name, summary and examples with design and images) - Due Thursday to share with the class.
