 Science Fair Interviewers STILL NEEDED!
We are in need of MANY volunteers to help interview 6th through 8th grade students about their science fair projects in the Old Junior High Gym on Wednesday, March 9 from 7:50 am until approximately 10:30 am (which is an early release day). You do NOT need to have a science background to help. We will provide you a list of questions to ask the students. The interview process gives students an opportunity to show their work to others while practicing essential communication skills. We have been able to conduct the interview process for over 17 years now thanks to our wonderful volunteers. We hope we can continue this valuable experience this year and in years to come. If this sounds like something you would be interested in helping with, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. If you are not able to help this year, perhaps you can forward this message on to a relative or friend who may be interested.  Just a reminder, a volunteer application and background check must be on file at the district office in order to volunteer within the district.  If you need a form, you can access it here:http://www.pleasanthill.k12.or.us/shop/wpimages/combinedvolunteerpacket.pdfIf you are able to help, please email Jada Taylor jtaylor@pleasanthill.k12.or.us   or call at 541-736-0718

Hello!
We almost have a final figure for our Run for Funds….$1842.57! We are getting closer to our goal, $2500, which will give students the opportunity to go away on a trip for the 3rd quarter reward activity (rather than doing an activity at the school). We are hoping students will bring in the last of their pledges this week to reach our goal. We will do a few more drawings during lunch this week for prizes. Students can turn in any donations to the office.
A big thank you goes out to you and our community for the support!
Thank you,
PHHS Staff

Hi!
Thank you!! The RUN for FUNDS was a success Friday!! Students have raised $1,570.00 so far!! Thank you Tammy Ellis, Kari Blatch and Wendy Wallace for your help! Students can bring their pledge money to their first period class to be picked up and counted this week.  The Cyber Fun Friday Q2 Reward activity was a hit as well, good job students!!
The Q3 reward activity is still to be decided based on funds and student choice, but here is the eligibility criteria for Q3:  students need to earn a “C” or higher in all classes and have positive behavior all quarter. This is the same criteria for the Q4 coast reward trip.  Please encourage your student to continue to build good study habits and have positive behavior.
Students are working hard finishing up their Science Fair Research Reports and should be starting the "Designing the Investigation" section (develop a materials list and procedures for their experiment to complete at home in the next couple weeks).  We will need help with Science Fair next month: Interview judges, no experience necessary, March 9th 8-10:30am (approx.).
Thank you,
PHHS Staff

Hello!
Students have started their 2nd semester classes and are off to a good start.
Students should be researching their 3 subtopics for their Science Fair Research Report and writing a rough draft to be peer edited on Feb 9th (Final due Mon. Feb 15th).  They have one week of in-class time to complete this, but may need to work on it at home. Thank you for your help keeping your student on track.
We have some fun things planned this Friday:
-Run for Funds, Friday 2/5 (12:30-1:30) Make sure your student brings their pledge sheet envelope to school that day. (money can be turned in that day but will mainly be collected the following week) Still need volunteers to help in the mornings, 7:40-8:10, collecting money Feb. 8-12. If you could help out on one of those days, please let McCool know. Any donation of small prizes for student incentives would be great as well!
-2nd Q Reward “Fun Friday” Activity, Fri. 2/5 1:30-3:10 I need two more volunteers to help monitor and serve ice cream sundaes during that time
We wanted to send our gratitude to all of you for the willingness to help with all the activities listed above. We know that many of you were willing but had conflicting schedules. We all really appreciate the community support we have always felt in Pleasant Hill!!
Cell Phone Issues
We need your help.  A significant number of our middle school students are using their cell phones at inappropriate times and in inappropriate ways.  This includes students taking inappropriate pictures of themselves or others and distributing them.  We take this very seriously and therefore the administration will be addressing these issues with all middle school students this week. We are hoping you will also have a discussion with your student about appropriate/inappropriate phone usage. THANK YOU for your assistance with this.   The school policy on Cellular Phones and Electronic Devices is as follows:
"Students are allowed to bring cellular phones, headsets, and electronic devices on campus provided that learning and teaching are not disrupted in any manner. Cellular phones must be turned off and headsets may not be worn while classes are in session. Electronic devices may be used in the classroom only when the teacher gives explicit permission. Disciplinary consequences for violations may include confiscation of the device."
Thank you,
PHHS Staff

 ~Reminder about Student Grades
Please check your student's grades online at least once per week, if possible. http://www.pleasanthill.k12.or.us/check-grades  User names and passwords were given to students on Sept. 23.  If you do not have it, you can contact the office staff.  Middle school grades are typically updated by Tuesday afternoon of each week.  As much as we would really like to be able to make a parent contact whenever a student is missing work, time constraints restrict us from doing so (each teacher sees over 150 students each day).  We really need parents to help students look at the grade book for missing assignments and to help encourage completion of the missing assignments.  If an assignment grade is "BLANK," the assignment has not been graded or entered yet. If an assignment grade is "0," it was not turned in and is now considered late. Please refer to the teacher's late work policy stated on the class syllabus. Most teachers accept late work with a grade reduction if presented in a timely manner.
Thank you for your help and support in educating your student!
End of first Quarter Reward Activity:  All 7th and 8th grade students who are passing all classes (no F's) by the end of first quarter and have positive behavior all quarter will be eligible for the reward activity to Putters and Strike City.  Please encourage your student to meet AND EXCEED these expectations!!!

Hello!
We had a great day together out in the forest last week for the Forest Field Day trip! Thank you for your help in preparing your student for the day. We had a great group of volunteers that day to guide students through the stations: Darrell Shoemaker, Carol Shoemaker, Brad Childs, Ellen Pavlosek, Greg Pittman, Emily Jeffs, Jackie Collins, Leroy Brunson, Kim Fairbairn, Jason Williams, and Emily Quindry~ Thank You so much for your help.  We would not be able to take students on field trips without extra help from volunteer chaperones.    Students are now working hard on their Forest Field Day Land Management Plans back in the classroom.

Hello!
7th grade students are working hard preparing for our field trip this Friday and learning about how to manage a forest. Please read the notes below:
FOREST FIELD DAY FIELD TRIP THIS FRIDAY, Oct. 2  8:00-3:00!  Your student needs to bring a lunch/drink, good hiking shoes, two writing tools, and wear layers of clothing. If you are chaperoning the field trip, I will be sending an informational letter home with your student tomorrow.  Please ask them for it.  Chaperones, please go to your child's first period class with them on Friday morning.  I will meet you there to go over details of the trip.  Thank you so much to our volunteers who are helping to make this trip possible.  We now have enough chaperones, but if anyone else wants to help please let me know.
~Please remind your student to check with all their teachers for make-up work when he/she has missed a school day. As mentioned in the course syllabus, this may be a big change for your 7thgrader; it is much harder to make-up work from 7 different classes. If you know ahead of time that your student will be absent, please bring a signed note to the office to get a prearranged absence form for teachers to complete.
~There have been a few teacher changes in the middle school schedule.  In order to reduce class sizes in the math department, the following changes were made.  Mrs. Perham is no longer the 7th grade PE teacher. She is the algebra 1 teacher for the 8th grade students.  Ms. Ermini is no longer the 8th grade PE teacher. She is the 7th grade PE teacher.  Mr. Light is now one of the 8th grade PE teachers.
Have a good week!

Hello!
We almost have a final figure for our Run for Funds….$3,543.51!! A big thank you goes out to you and our community for the support. Students earned enough for our planned trips and designated supplies to last until next February! We will do a few more drawings this week for prizes. Students can still turn in any donations to the office.
SCIENCE FAIR Update!!! DUE MONDAY, MARCH 9
  • Students should have turned in their final draft of their research paper to Mrs. McCool. They will print another copy to place on their science fair board.
  • Students should now be conducting their experiment AT HOME. It is VERY important that they record their data in their science fair journal. If they haven't started their experiment yet, please encourage them to do so SOON!
  • After they have collected their data, the next step will be to graph their data "Collecting and Presenting Data". Then they need to write the "Analyzing and Interpreting Results" section. (we will be discussing these sections in class next week.)
  • About one week prior to the science fair, students should type all parts and put them on their display board. Display boards will be available for purchase at school. Used boards with new butcher paper will be for sale for 5 Billie Bucks or they can purchase A VERY LIMITED SUPPLY of brand new colored boards for $3 (real money). Hello!
Students have started their 2nd semester classes and are off to a good start (they should have the same class schedule).
Students should be researching their 3 subtopics for their Science Fair Research Reports due Thursday Feb. 12th for peer editing.  They have one week of in-class time to complete this, but may need to work on it at home. Thank you for your help keeping your student on track.
We have some fun things planned in the coming weeks:
-Run for Funds, Friday 2/6 (12:30-1:30) Make sure your student brings their pledge sheet envelope to school that day. (money can be turned in that day but will mainly be collected the following week) Still need volunteers to help in the mornings, 7:40-8:10, collecting money Feb. 9-17. If you could help out on one of those days, please let McCool know. Any donation of small prizes for student incentives would be great as well!
-2nd Q Reward Cyber Activity, Fri. 2/6 1;30-3:10 I need two more volunteers to help monitor and serve ice cream sundaes during that time
-Tree Planting Field trip, Friday. March 20th 9-12 We will need at least 8 volunteers to join us :) More info. will be coming later.
We wanted to send our gratitude to all of you for the willingness to help with all the activities listed above. We know that many of you were willing but had conflicting schedules. We all really appreciate the community support we have always felt in Pleasant Hill!!
 Thank you,
PHHS Staff

If you know ahead of time that your student will be absent, please bring a signed note to the office to get a prearranged absence form for teachers to complete.

    1. Putting it online, great idea! I'm just starting up this blog page, so I will get that form and others we use regularly (Science in the news) on here. I'm on my home computer now, so I will see what I can do during Spring Break. Thanks!!

  4. Right now you have to copy the image and paste to a word doc. I will get it changed later as a link.
    Thanks!
